Since my stationary belt sander lacks of vertical support to sand edges, I came up with these two jigs for my 6" X 48" stationnary belt sander. The horizontal jig used for long stock clamps to my drill press table while the vertical jig, for shorter stock, clamps to the tool shelf.
I have a variety of sanders- Craftsman 6×48(took the disk off), 16/32 drum sander, Grizzly spindle sander, a couple of porter Cable belt sanders, and other small ones. I use them all. The 6×48 flattens figured wood that my jointer would tear up. I use a 36 grit planer belt. The drum sander saves a lot of time on cutting boards and boxes.

I've got two edge sanders in the shop, both 106×6. One oscillates the other doesn't. First and foremost importance is the guy standing in front of the sander…..I've seen guys burn out a 40 grit belt in 5 minutes, others, a 150 grit belt will last weeks.

Many years ago I bought several tools used including a craftsman 6 x 48 in belt/disk. It was not very useful because it stalled too easily. Later, I used its 1/2 hp motor elsewhere and put on a 3/4 hp motor and put a smaller drive pulley on the motor to reduce the speed to about 5/8 ths of what it originally was.

Keep material moving and sand lightly, a sanding disc or belt in good condition requires little pressure. Pushing too hard against the disk or belt may cause an operator's hand to slip and press into the disk / belt which can lead to injury. ALWAYS use the table to support the material. Always use clamps or jigs to hold small pieces.
4×36 benchtop belt sander with 8" disk; 1×42 belt knife sander with 6" disk; Combo OSS and 4×24 oscillating belt sander ; 1/4 sheet sander (free with router purchase) 'mouse' detail sander; 6×48 stationary sander with 9" disk; Not to mention various and sundry sanding s, blocks, sheets, pads, etc, etc, etc.
I've used belt sanders for sharpening for over 30 years. I prefer the combo machine with a course belt on the 6 x 48 and fine paper on the 12" disk. I've found that the slower speed (1725 rpm) metal working models will not overheat the metal as easily as the faster speed (3450 rpm) models. Klingspor makes some great belts and sanding discs.
Just got a sweet Atlas 5010 sander and I got it pretty much restored. Looking at the directions it gives four places to "oil" but does not say how to apply it or what type of oil. For example, one place is in the unpowered roller for the belt sander. There is a bolt going through the bearing that says "oil" on the bolt head.
